“食物系统与政策”海外大师联合工作室系列讲座第六讲将于北京时间2023年8月18日(周五)13:30在创意楼a座729会议室举行,本期邀请到肯塔基大学yuqing zheng(郑于青)教授为我们带来学术报告。
讲座主题:
the market for private food safety certifications:development, conceptual framework, and some empiricalevidence on whether they made our food system safer
讲座摘要:
since the inception of private food safety standards in the late 1990s, producers, processors, retailers, and governments have been increasingly relying on them to provide assurances to food safety. during this talk, professor zheng will first go over a conceptual framework for the market of private food safety standards through the lens of agri-food supply chain logistics, outlining how the key players in the market interact. second, he will summarize the development in this field. third, he will present his most recent research (with professor lijiao hu) on the effect of certifications on the safety of our food supply. they empirically explore the effects of private food safety certification on food safety performance in the meat, poultry, and egg products industry using the united states department of agricultural pathogen sampling results as the measurement for food safety performances. applying a penalized maximum likelihood method to establishment level data for 2015 through 2018, they found that the british retail consortium food safety standard (brc) certification decreased the probability of an establishment getting a positive test result for salmonella and campylobacter, while the safe quality food (sqf) certification decreased the probability of an establishment getting a positive test result for campylobacter and listeria. such results support the view that food safety certification could make our food system safer.

yuqing zheng(郑于青),肯塔基大学教授
dr. yuqing zheng(郑于青)is the h.b. price professor at the department of agricultural economics, university of kentucky. he is an adjunct professor at cornell university, university of vermont, agri-food research and technology center of aragón in spain, and zhejiang university. he received his b.s. degree from zhejiang university, ph.d. degree from auburn university, and postdoctoral training from cornell university.
dr. zheng’s research focuses on food marketing, policy, and labeling/certification, with implications to health. he has published widely in top field journals such as american journal of agricultural economics, health economics, regional science and urban economics, nicotine and tobacco research, agricultural economics, food policy, food control as well as general interest economics journals such as economic inquiry, southern economic journal, and economics letters. he developed the tobacco category model and trade impact model for the u.s. food and drug admiration (fda) and was a past chair of the china section of the agricultural & applied economics association (aaea). dr. zheng is an associate editor of tobacco regulatory science and guest edited for several journals. he ranked in 2022 as a top ten chinese agricultural economist by publications in top three agricultural economics journals.
dr. zheng’s recent research has focused on the connection of food and health, big data and machine learning applications, meat alternatives, non-gmo and bio-engineered food, and food safety certifications. he is one of the first researchers conducting empirical research on food safety certification, especially from firm perspective.
